Great Danes - Small Misunderstanding of the Big Name

Germany is the motherland of the Great Dane. In fact, the breed is the descendent of Molloser dogs that were known in Europe at the time of the Roma Empire. They were massive courageous dogs and were used for protection work. The Great Dane has close links to other massive breeds, such as the Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux, and others.

It is worth saying that the name of the breed has been the subject to confusion in the early stages of its development as well. In the first half of the 19th century, there were a few varieties of the breed. The final step towards establishing a separate breed was done in 1880 with setting the first breed standard. The Great Dane started to be regarded the national symbol of Germany. Great Danes did not change much in form at that time either in appearance, or temperament traits.
